Our Nursery is very much part of our school, which goes up to age 11. We are very aware that children learn through play but we also feel that unless they are given the basic skills of letter-recognition, writing and numbers they are disadvantaged.
Because we have such a high ratio of staff to children (1:5) progress is possible. We can differentiate so that those children who are ready and need more stimulation can receive it, and through the teaching expertise of trained teachers with assistants, the children achieve advanced skills while also having an enjoyable time.
All the play has a learning objective and the staff are focused on furthering the education of the children. By the end of the Foundation Stage the children are able to read and write simple stories, and use their numbers for adding and subtracting, through many fun ways. We also have an interactive whiteboard in each class and a computer, so the teachers can make learning even more fun.
The children have a specialist music, French and drama lesson each week also and they have gymnastics and music and movement.
We also believe strongly in values, and teaching the children how to care for each other, to be polite and helpful. All the children come to a short assembly four days a week, which is in Christian format with a story, hymn and a prayer, but we also celebrate their achievements, whether academic or a kind act. We also celebrate many festivals from different faiths.
We do expect the children, having joined St.Helen's College, to stay with us throughout the school until Year 6, when they frequently move on to the school of their choice, a Bucks grammar school or an independent secondary school.
