We have been established in Abergavenny for 14 years. We occupy a large town house in the centre of the town, which makes all amenities within walking distance. The children are regularly taken on walks to the local parks, castle, library, shops etc.
Birth to 2 years is a 1 adult to 3 children ratio, 2 to 3 years is a 1 adult to 4 children ratio, then above 3 years is the 1 adult to 8 children ratio. Because we have more staff than is legally required, our ratio for 3 years plus is usually 1 adult to 5 children.
The day in the Nursery has a routine. When the children first arrive they are altogether in the green room on the ground floor. They are soon off to their own rooms, the yellow room for the 0 - 2 years is on the first floor, along with the purple room for the 2 - 3 year olds. The pre-school children are in the red room on the ground floor. The under 3s move between their base rooms, the garden and the craft room regularly throughout the day. The pre-school children have the choice of where they want to be.
The garden is large and flat and we have numerous outdoor toys and slides.
The craft room is also used as a dining room and Singing and big band music take place here too. PE and Music and movement take place regularly too.
Cooking is done by the children either in the green room or in the kitchen if it is after lunch.
The children have a snack mid morning and afternoon and lunch is a two course home cooked meal served at 12 noon. A light tea is served at 4.30pm. No salt is added, and added sugar is kept to a minimum.
Our policy and procedures file is available for all parents at any time; new parents will be asked to read it when they register their child. These are the policies and procedures, which we at Abacus operate under.
The Kids Club is open before school, after school and during school holidays providing continuity for the children in an environment they are already familiar with.
The children can have breakfast; they are given a snack and a drink on their return from school, and they have tea at 4.30pm. During the holidays they also have a cooked two-course lunch.
They are taken to school in cars, escorted by a member of staff who ensures they are safely delivered and collected. We can also be the emergency contact for the child so that we can collect them if they are poorly, at least then they can curl up on a settee or bed until parents can be contacted.
If they have after school clubs we cannot, usually, go back for them. Please ask someone to drop them off to us after the club.
The Kids Club operates under the same policies and procedures as the Nursery.
Priority during the holidays is given to those children who attend all year round, we will then try and fit in any who want holiday care only.
